To honor the sort-of end of the season, here are the best celebrations to check out in Austin over the long holiday weekend from Friday, September 1 through Monday, September 4. Everything is big in Texas and the state's flagship university is bigger than most.Labor Day weekend provides one last opportunity to celebrate summer (as much as the very, very, very hot season ever really ends in Texas). If that isn't enough, UT-Texas also has produced 13 Nobel Prize winners, four Pulitzer Prize recipients and 42 NCAA championships. The world's third largest telescope, the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, and three other large telescopes are part of the university's McDonald Observatory, which is located 400 miles west of Austin. The newest museum, the 155,000-square-foot Blanton Museum of Art, is the largest university art museum in the United States and hosts 17,000 works from Europe, the United States and Latin America. At the top of the tower is a carillon of 56 bells, the largest in Texas. It is usually illuminated by a white light in the evening but it burnt orange (school colors) for various occasions, including victories and academic accomplishments. One of the campus' most visible features is the Beaux-Arts Main Building, including a 307-foot-tall tower designed by Paul Phillippe Cret that was completed in 1937. Stroll the beautiful campus, which covers 425.5 acres and features 150 buildings with 18 million square feet of space. With over nine million volumes, UT-Austin has the seventh largest academic library in the nation. Holdings of the Harry Ransom Humanitarian Research Center include one of only 21 remaining complete copies of the Gutenberg Bible and the first permanent photograph, View from the Window at Le Gras, taken by Nicephore Niepce. Founded in 1883, UT-Austin is considered one of eight of the public Ivies in the United States with seven museums and 17 libraries, including the LBJ Presidential Library and the Blanton Museum of Art.
